From School Fair to CWSF: BC's Science Fair Pathway and 13 Regional Fairs

Updated 2026-06-11 · Always verify with official school and fair websites

Canada's science fair system is a sequential ladder with no shortcuts: school fair → one of BC's 13 regional fairs → Team BC selection → CWSF nationals → international competition (ISEF). For students in Metro Vancouver, the regional stage is GVRSF. Understanding how each level connects — and where the real competition concentrates — is the starting point for any serious preparation plan.

The full ladder at a glance

| Level | Event | When | Organizer / Coordinator | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 1 — School | School science fair | Fall–winter | Individual schools | | 2 — Regional | One of BC's 13 regional fairs | Feb–Apr | Regional committees; Science Fair Foundation BC | | 3 — National | CWSF (Canada-Wide Science Fair) | May 23–30, 2026, Edmonton | Youth Science Canada | | 4 — International | ISEF and others | May | Society for Science |

Advancement must happen level by level — there is no route to CWSF that bypasses a regional fair.

BC's 13 regional fairs

BC has 13 regional fairs spread across the province, all coordinated by Science Fair Foundation BC (sciencefairs.ca). Which regional fair a student attends is determined by their school district; students cannot choose a different region.

The following 2026 dates have been confirmed or announced for selected regional fairs (check sciencefairs.ca for remaining regions):

| Regional Fair | 2026 Dates | Venue | | --- | --- | --- | | GVRSF (Metro Vancouver) | April 9–11 | UBC, Vancouver | | UNBC Science Fair (Northern BC) | April 11 | UNBC, Prince George | | KPU Science Fair (Surrey / Fraser) | April 13–14 | KPU Surrey | | Victoria / Vancouver Island | April 12–13 | UVic, Victoria |

Dates for remaining regional fairs — verify at sciencefairs.ca.

Metro Vancouver students: GVRSF is your regional fair

Students in Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, and most Metro Vancouver districts compete at GVRSF (Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair). In 2026, GVRSF runs April 9–11 at UBC, with registration open mid-February through March 10 ($65 per student, at science-ation.ca — no late entries). For the full GVRSF preparation guide, see our GVRSF guide.

Team BC: the bridge from regional to national

After each regional fair, top projects are aggregated by Science Fair Foundation BC into Team BC, which represents the province at CWSF. How many spots each region receives is determined by Science Fair Foundation BC — check sciencefairs.ca for current allocation details. Making Team BC is not just a ticket to nationals; it is a meaningful academic credential in its own right.

ISEF: the global stage

The strongest projects at CWSF may be nominated to represent Canada at ISEF — the International Science and Engineering Fair, run by the non-profit Society for Science. ISEF is the world's largest and most recognized pre-university science competition, drawing students from more than 60 countries each May. For students with global ambitions, CWSF is a necessary step on the path, not a final destination.
